docs: add guidelines for submitting new filesystems
This document is motivated by the ongoing maintenance burden that
abandoned and untestable filesystems impose on VFS developers, blocking
infrastructure changes such as folio conversions and iomap migration.
This week alone, two new filesystems were proposed on linux-fsdevel
(VMUFAT and FTRFS), highlighting the need for documented guidelines
that new filesystem authors can refer to before submission.
Multiple recent discussions on linux-fsdevel have touched on the
criteria for merging new filesystems and for deprecating old ones,
covering topics such as modern VFS interface adoption, testability,
userspace utilities, maintainer commitment, and user base viability.
Add Documentation/filesystems/adding-new-filesystems.rst describing
the technical requirements and community expectations for merging a
new filesystem into the kernel. The guidelines cover:
- Alternatives to consider before proposing a new in-kernel filesystem
- Technical requirements: modern VFS interfaces (iomap, folios,
fs_context mount API), testability, and userspace utilities
- Community expectations: identified maintainers, demonstrated
commitment, sustained backing, and a clear user base
- Ongoing obligations after merging, including the risk of deprecation
for unmaintained filesystems

dcache: add extra sanity checks of the dentry in dentry_free()

Change D_FLAG_VERIFY() to call that instead of a generic WARN_ON_ONCE().
Change the existing hlist_unhashed() check in dentry_free() to use the

fs/coredump: reduce redundant log noise in validate_coredump_safety
Currently, writing to 'core_pattern' or 'suid_dumpable' sysctl nodes
always triggers validate_coredump_safety(), even if the values have
not changed. This results in redundant warning messages in dmesg:
"Unsafe core_pattern used with fs.suid_dumpable=2..."
This patch optimizes the procfs handlers to only invoke the safety
validation when an actual change in the configuration is detected:
1. In proc_dostring_coredump(), compare the new core_pattern string
with the existing one using strncmp().
2. In proc_dointvec_minmax_coredump(), check if the new suid_dumpable
value differs from the previous one.
This keeps the kernel log clean from repetitive warnings when
re-applying the same sysctl settings.
Use kmalloc_flex() when allocating a new 'struct external_name' in
__d_alloc() to replace offsetof() and the open-coded size arithmetic,
and to keep the size type-safe.
vfs: remove always taken if-branch in find_next_fd()
find_next_fd() finds the next free fd slot in the passed fdtable's
bitmap. It does so in two steps: first it checks whether the bitmap
has a free entry in the word containing start. If not, it looks at
second level bitmap that registers which words in the first level bitmap
are full and then looks at the first level bitmap at the first non-full
word.
In the current code the second level lookup is done by:
where bitbit = start / BITS_PER_LONG. However, in the fast path (first
step) we already checked the word at bitbit, so we can skip that word bit
and start at bitbit+1. This also means that we can get rid of the branch

iov_iter: use kmemdup_array for dup_iter to harden against overflow
While auditing the Linux 7.0-rc2 kernel, I identified a potential security
vulnerability in the iov_iter framework's memory allocation logic.
The dup_iter() function, which is exported via EXPORT_SYMBOL, currently
uses kmemdup() with a raw multiplication to allocate the duplicate iovec array:
The hazard here is that dup_iter() relies on a primitive multiplication without
any integrated overflow check. Since nr_segs is often derived from user-space
input, this line is vulnerable to integer overflow (on 32-bit systems or
via type narrowing), potentially leading to a small allocation followed by a
large out-of-bounds memory copy. Furthermore, it allows for unbounded memory
allocations, as the function lacks intrinsic knowledge of safe limits.
On the 7.0-rc2 branch, several high-impact callchains still rely on this
exported function:
drivers/usb/gadget/function/f_fs.c:
The ffs_epfile_read_iter() path demonstrates why relying on dup_iter() is
dangerous: it performs allocation based on user input before verifying driver
state. This confirms that dup_iter() must be hardened internally as it cannot
assume pre-validated input.
drivers/usb/gadget/legacy/inode.c:
The ep_read_iter() path illustrates how dup_iter()’s lack of boundary awareness
compounds resource risks. When combined with other allocations, it creates
a multiplier effect for kernel memory pressure.
This patch replaces kmemdup() with kmemdup_array(), which utilizes
check_mul_overflow() to ensure the allocation size is calculated safely,
hardening dup_iter() against malicious or malformed inputs from its callers

initramfs_test: test header fields with 0x hex prefix
cpio header fields are 8-byte hex strings, but one "interesting"
side-effect of our historic simple_str[n]toul() use means that a "0x"
(or "0X") prefixed header field will be successfully processed when
coupled alongside a 6-byte hex remainder string.
"0x" prefix support is contrary to the initramfs specification at
Documentation/driver-api/early-userspace/buffer-format.rst which states:
The structure of the cpio_header is as follows (all fields contain
hexadecimal ASCII numbers fully padded with '0' on the left to the
full width of the field, for example, the integer 4780 is represented
by the ASCII string "000012ac"):
Test for this corner case by injecting "0x" prefixes into the uid, gid
and namesize cpio header fields. Confirm that init_stat() returns
matching uid and gid values.
This test can be modified in future to expect unpack_to_rootfs() failure
when header validation is changed to properly follow the specification.
Add some missing struct kstat initializations to account for possible
init_stat() failures.

Merge patch series "selftests/namespaces: Fix test hangs and false failures"
Ricardo B. Marlière <rbm@suse.com> says:
This series addresses three reliability problems in the namespaces selftest
suite that cause tests to hang or report incorrect results.
The first patch fixes a hang in nsid_test where the grandchild process is
not reaped during fixture teardown, leaving it alive and holding the TAP
pipe write-end open so the test runner blocks indefinitely waiting for EOF.
The second and third patches fix two problems in listns_efault_test: a
waitpid(-1) race that can cause the iterator child to be consumed during
namespace cleanup (leading to an indefinite block on the subsequent targeted
waitpid), and a false FAIL verdict on kernels that do not implement listns()
(the EFAULT tests should SKIP in that case, consistent with every other
listns test that already handles ENOSYS correctly).
selftests/namespaces: Skip efault tests when listns() is not available
When listns() is not implemented the iterator child detects ENOSYS and
exits cleanly with status PIDFD_SKIP before the parent has a chance to
signal it. The parent sends SIGKILL (which is a harmless no-op at that
point) and then calls waitpid(), obtaining a normal-exit status. The
subsequent ASSERT_TRUE(WIFSIGNALED(status)) therefore fails, causing the
three EFAULT-focused tests to report FAIL rather than SKIP on kernels that
do not yet carry listns() support.
After collecting the iterator's exit status, check whether it exited with
PIDFD_SKIP and issue a SKIP verdict in that case, consistent with the
behaviour of every other listns test that already handles ENOSYS correctly.
selftests/namespaces: Fix waitpid race in listns_efault_test cleanup
The efault tests spawn two categories of child processes: namespace
children (each in its own mount namespace, for concurrent destruction) and
an iterator child that calls listns() in a tight loop. The cleanup loop
used waitpid(-1), which reaps any child in any order. If the iterator child
exits early (e.g. because listns() returned ENOSYS) before all namespace
children have been reaped, waitpid(-1) may consume it instead. The
subsequent targeted waitpid(iter_pid) would then block indefinitely.
Track the PIDs of the namespace children explicitly and use targeted
waitpid() calls in the cleanup loop so the iterator child cannot be
inadvertently reaped during namespace cleanup.

The first patch fixes copy_struct_to_user()

The 2nd patch fixes the case where
copy_struct_from_user() is called by
copy_struct_from_sockptr().
The 3rd patch introduces
copy_struct_{from,to}_bounce_buffer()
as a result of a discussion about the
IPPROTO_QUIC driver in order to
be future prove when handling msg_control
messages in sendmsg and recvmsg.
But I'll likely also use them in my
IPPROTO_SMBDIRECT driver.
The 4th patch makes copy_struct_from_sockptr()
a trivial wrapper switching between
copy_struct_from_user() and
copy_struct_from_bounce_buffer()
The 5th patch introduces copy_struct_to_sockptr()
which I'll also use in my IPPROTO_SMBDIRECT driver.

uaccess: add copy_struct_{from,to}_bounce_buffer() helpers
sockptr: fix usize check in copy_struct_from_sockptr() for user pointers
uaccess: fix ignored_trailing logic in copy_struct_to_user()
selftests/namespaces: Kill grandchild in nsid fixture teardown
The timens_separate and pidns_separate test cases fork a grandchild that
calls pause(). FIXTURE_TEARDOWN only kills the direct child, which is the
init process of the grandchild's namespace. Once the child (init) exits,
the grandchild is reparented to the host init but remains alive and
continues to hold the inherited write end of the test runner's TAP pipe
open. tap_prefix never receives EOF and blocks indefinitely, hanging the
entire test collection.
Record the grandchild PID in the fixture struct so that teardown can send
SIGKILL and reap it before dealing with the child. The grandchild must be
reaped first because the child acts as its PID namespace init; killing the
child first would kill the grandchild without giving us a chance to
waitpid() it.
We already have copy_struct_from_sockptr() as wrapper to
copy_struct_from_user() or copy_struct_from_bounce_buffer(),
so it's good to have copy_struct_to_sockptr()
as well matching the behavior of copy_struct_to_user()
or copy_struct_to_bounce_buffer().
The world would be better without sockptr_t, but having
copy_struct_to_sockptr() is better than open code it
in various places.
I'll use this in my IPPROTO_SMBDIRECT work,
but maybe it will also be useful for others...
IPPROTO_QUIC will likely also use it.

Initial SoC Slider support
SoC Slider is an SoC-wide power/performance policy setting.
On SoC Slider systems, EPP plays a diminished role.

tools/power x86_energy_perf_policy: Enhances SoC Slider related checks
When processor_thermal_soc_slider is loaded, its slider
and offset modparams are visible. Check that the driver
actually registered the profile named "SoC Slider" before
reading or writing these modparams.
n.b. This utility allows writing the Slider and Offset modparams
even if the driver policy is not "balanced". Currently the
processor_thermal_soc_slider consults those modparams
only in "balanced" mode.
clk: bcm: rpi: Mark VEC clock as CLK_IGNORE_UNUSED
On Raspberry Pi 3B, the VEC clock is used by the VideoCore firmware
display driver, which remains active until the vc4 driver loads and
sends NOTIFY_DISPLAY_DONE. If this clock is disabled during boot, a bus
lockup happens and the firmware becomes unresponsive, causing a complete
system lockup.
Mark the VEC clock with CLK_IGNORE_UNUSED so it survives the unused
clock disablement and remains available until the vc4 driver takes over
display management.

Pull ring-buffer fix from Steven Rostedt:
- Fix accounting of persistent ring buffer rewind
On boot up, the head page is moved back to the earliest point of the
saved ring buffer. This is because the ring buffer being read by user
space on a crash may not save the part it read. Rewinding the head
page back to the earliest saved position helps keep those events from
being lost.
The number of events is also read during boot up and displayed in the
stats file in the tracefs directory. It's also used for other
accounting as well. On boot up, the "reader page" is accounted for
but a rewind may put it back into the buffer and then the reader page
may be accounted for again.
Save off the original reader page and skip accounting it when
scanning the pages in the ring buffer.

- Fix for a NOMMU bug with io_uring, where NOMMU doesn't grab page refs
at mmap time. NOMMU also has entirely broken FOLL_PIN support, yet
here we are
- A few fixes covering minor issues introduced in this merge window
- data race annotation to shut up KCSAN for when io-wq limits are
applied
- A nospec addition for direct descriptor file updating. Rest of the
direct descriptor path already had this, but for some reason the
update did not. Now they are all the same
- Various minor defensive changes that claude identified and suggested
terrible fixes for, turned into actually useful cleanups:
- Use kvfree() for the imu cache. These can come from kmalloc or
vmalloc depending on size, but the in-cache ones are capped
where it's always kmalloc based. Change to kvfree() in the
cleanup path, making future changes unlikely to mess that up
- Negative kbuf consumption lengths. Can't happen right now, but
cqe->res is used directly, which if other codes changes could
then be an error value
- Fix for an issue with the futex code, where partial wakes on a
vectored fuxes would potentially wake the same futex twice, rather
than move on to the next one. This could confuse an application as it
would've expected the next futex to have been woken
- Fix for a bug with ring resizing, where SQEs or CQEs might not have
been copied correctly if large SQEs or CQEs are used in the ring.
Application side issue, where SQEs or CQEs might have been lost
during resize
- Fix for a bug where EPOLL_URING_WAKE might have been lost, causing a
multishot poll to not be terminated when it's nested, like it should
have been
- Fix for an issue with signed comparison of poll references for the
slow path
- Fix for a user struct UAF in the zcrx code

Pull RISC-V updates from Paul Walmsley:
"There is one significant change outside arch/riscv in this pull
request: the addition of a set of KUnit tests for strlen(), strnlen(),
and strrchr().
Otherwise, the most notable changes are to add some RISC-V-specific
string function implementations, to remove XIP kernel support, to add
hardware error exception handling, and to optimize our runtime
unaligned access speed testing.
A few comments on the motivation for removing XIP support. It's been
broken in the RISC-V kernel for months. The code is not easy to
maintain. Furthermore, for XIP support to truly be useful for RISC-V,
we think that compile-time feature switches would need to be added for
many of the RISC-V ISA features and microarchitectural properties that
are currently implemented with runtime patching. No one has stepped
forward to take responsibility for that work, so many of us think it's
best to remove it until clear use cases and champions emerge.
Summary:
- Add Kunit correctness testing and microbenchmarks for strlen(),
strnlen(), and strrchr()

Old code like amateur radio and NFC have long been a burden to core
networking developers. syzbot loves to find bugs in BKL-era code, and
noobs try to fix them.
If we want to have a fighting chance of surviving the LLM-pocalypse
this code needs to find a dedicated owner or get deleted. We've talked
about these deletions multiple times in the past and every time
someone wanted the code to stay. It is never very clear to me how many
of those people actually use the code vs are just nostalgic to see it
go. Amateur radio did have occasional users (or so I think) but most
users switched to user space implementations since its all super slow
stuff. Nobody stepped up to maintain the kernel code.
We were lucky enough to find someone who wants to help with NFC so
we're giving that a chance. Let's try to put the rest of this code

x86/mm: Revert INVLPGB optimization for set_memory code
tl;dr: Revert an INVLPGB optimization that did not properly handle
discontiguous virtual addresses.
Full story:
I got a report from some graphics (i915) folks that bisected a
regression in their test suite to 86e6815b316e ("x86/mm: Change
cpa_flush() to call flush_kernel_range() directly"). There was a bit
of flip-flopping on the exact bisect, but the code here does seem
wrong to me. The i915 folks were calling set_pages_array_wc(), so
using the CPA_PAGES_ARRAY mode.
Basically, the 'struct cpa_data' can wrap up all kinds of page table
changes. Some of these are virtually contiguous, but some are very
much not which is one reason why there are ->vaddr and ->pages arrays.
86e6815b316e made the mistake of assuming that the virtual addresses
in the cpa_data are always contiguous. It got things right when neither
CPA_ARRAY/CPA_PAGES_ARRAY is used, but theoretically wrong when either
of those is used.
In the i915 case, it probably failed to flush some WB TLB entries and
install WC ones, leaving some data in the caches and not flushing it
out to where the device could see it. That eventually caused graphics
problems.
Revert the INVLPGB optimization. It can be reintroduced later, but it
will need to be a bit careful about the array modes.

kbuild: Never respect CONFIG_WERROR / W=e to fixdep
The fixdep hostprog may be built multiple times during a single build.
Once during the configuration phase and later during the regular phase.
As only the regular build phase respects CONFIG_WERROR / W=e, the
compiler flags might change between the phases, leading to rebuilds.
Example, the rebuilds will happen twice on each invocation of the build:

Fix the compilation flags used for scripts/basic/ before
scripts/Makefile.warn is evaluated to stop CONFIG_WERROR / W=e
influencing the fixdep build to avoid the spurious rebuilds.

Remove a number of ISA and PCMCIA Ethernet drivers
These old drivers have not been much of a Maintenance burden until
recently. Now there are more newbies using AI and fuzzers finding
issues, resulting in more work for Maintainers. Fixing these old
drivers make little sense, if it is not clear they have users.
These mostly ISA and PCMCIA Ethernet devices, mostly from the last
century, a couple from 2001 or 2002. It seems unlikely they are still
used. However, remove them one patch at a time so they can be brought
back if somebody still has the hardware, runs modern kernels and wants
to take up the roll of driver Maintainer.
====================
Merge patch series "eventpoll: fix ep_remove() UAF and follow-up cleanup"
Christian Brauner <brauner@kernel.org> says:
ep_remove() (via __ep_remove_file()) cleared file->f_ep under
file->f_lock but then kept using @file in the same critical section:
is_file_epoll(), hlist_del_rcu() through the head, spin_unlock. A
concurrent __fput() on the watched eventpoll caught the transient
NULL in eventpoll_release()'s lockless fast path, skipped
eventpoll_release_file() entirely, and ran to ep_eventpoll_release()
-> ep_clear_and_put() -> ep_free(). That kfree()s the struct
eventpoll whose embedded ->refs hlist_head is exactly where
epi->fllink.pprev points and the subsequent hlist_del_rcu()'s
"*pprev = next" scribbles into freed kmalloc-192 memory, which is
the slab-use-after-free KASAN caught.
struct file is SLAB_TYPESAFE_BY_RCU on top of that so the same window
also lets the slot recycle while ep_remove() is still nominally
inside file->f_lock. The upshot is an attacker-influencable
kmem_cache_free() against the wrong slab cache.
The comment on eventpoll_release()'s fast path - "False positives
simply cannot happen because the file in on the way to be removed
and nobody ( but eventpoll ) has still a reference to this file" -
was itself the wrong invariant this race exploits.
The fix pins @file via epi_fget() at the top of ep_remove() and
gates the f_ep clear / hlist_del_rcu() on the pin succeeding. With
the pin held __fput() cannot start which transitively keeps the
watched struct eventpoll alive across the critical section and also
prevents the struct file slot from recycling. Both UAFs are closed.
If the pin fails __fput() is already in flight on @file. Because we
bail before clearing f_ep that path takes eventpoll_release()'s slow
path into eventpoll_release_file() which blocks on ep->mtx until
ep_clear_and_put() drops it and then cleans up the orphaned epi. The
bailed epi's share of ep->refcount stays intact so
ep_clear_and_put()'s trailing ep_refcount_dec_and_test() cannot free
the eventpoll out from under eventpoll_release_file().
With epi_fget() now gating every ep_remove() call the epi->dying
flag becomes vestigial. epi->dying == true always coincides with
file_ref_get() == false because __fput() is reachable only once the
refcount hits zero and the refcount is monotone there. The last
patch drops the flag and leaves a single coordination mechanism
instead of two.
* patches from https://patch.msgid.link/20260423-work-epoll-uaf-v1-0-2470f9eec0f5@kernel.org:
eventpoll: drop vestigial epi->dying flag
eventpoll: drop dead bool return from __ep_remove_epi()
eventpoll: refresh eventpoll_release() fast-path comment
eventpoll: move f_lock acquisition into __ep_remove_file()
eventpoll: fix ep_remove struct eventpoll / struct file UAF
eventpoll: move epi_fget() up
eventpoll: rename ep_remove_safe() back to ep_remove()
eventpoll: kill __ep_remove()
eventpoll: split __ep_remove()
eventpoll: use hlist_is_singular_node() in __ep_remove()
With ep_remove() now pinning @file via epi_fget() across the
f_ep clear and hlist_del_rcu(), the dying flag no longer
orchestrates anything: it was set in eventpoll_release_file()
(which only runs from __fput(), i.e. after @file's refcount has
reached zero) and read in __ep_remove() / ep_remove() as a cheap
bail before attempting the same synchronization epi_fget() now
provides unconditionally.
The implication is simple: epi->dying == true always coincides
with file_ref_get(&file->f_ref) == false, because __fput() is
reachable only once the refcount hits zero and the refcount is
monotone in that state. The READ_ONCE(epi->dying) in ep_remove()
therefore selects exactly the same callers that epi_fget() would
reject, just one atomic cheaper. That's not worth a struct
field, a second coordination mechanism, and the comments on
both.
Refresh the eventpoll_release_file() comment to describe what
actually makes the path race-free now (the pin in ep_remove()).
No functional change: the correctness argument is unchanged,
only the mechanism is now a single one instead of two.
